Over the rainbow

“Over the rainbow”, curated by Martina Venturi, Nirox Foundation – Johannesburg

The great permanent land art work by Valerio Berruti entitled Over the rainbow was inaugurated on November 30, 2011 at the Nirox Foundation in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Valerio Berruti was one of the artists in residence at the prestigious Nirox Foundation. On site, he decided to create an ambitious site-specific project: drawing the face of a little girl on an entire hill, a land art work of such large dimensions that it can also be observed through Google Earth. A delicate and non-invasive intervention towards the environment, a metaphor that expresses hope for the future in a territory torn by history. To create Over the rainbow, the artist used only flowers and the vegetation present in addition to one hundred tons of stones painted with lime.

On the evening of the inauguration, the video “Udaka” – mud in Zulu – composed of 350 drawings on paper made using the earth coming from the Nirox Foundation, was projected on the lake of the Nirox Sculpture Park.
